Harry Potter
With the appearance of any young school boy and with some of the same interests this thin, scruffy haired boy with the large round glasses was destined for a life far from normalcy.Harry James Potter was born on July 31st 1980, the same year that saw the murder of John Lennon the only child of James Potter and Lily Evans. Sadly, by the time Harry was fifteen months old he was orphaned when his parents were by killed by the evil Lord Voldemort at Godric’s Hollow. Although fighting desperately for her own life Lily managed to save the life of her son Harry and in doing so her sacrificial love bestowed upon him some magical powers that would help him resist further attacks by Lord Voldemort.
After the premature deaths of his parents, Harry went to live with his mother’s sister, Petunia and her husband, Vernon Dursley in four Privet Drive, Little Whinging, Surrey, a small town just outside London, England, the home of Queen Elizabeth II The couple already had one son, Dudley, who was born just one month before Harry and who was an intensely spoilt brat.It had not been from choice that Petunia and Vernon had become the foster parents of Harry and this was always evident in the way they treated the boy in comparison to their own son, Dudley. Harry was treated with disdain and at times with cruelty. But worse than that, the couple kept the secret from him about his parent’s death. Harry was lead to believe that his parents had been killed in a car crash and in concealing the truth of their death Petunia and Vernon omitted to reveal to Harry any knowledge of his magical powers.
When Harry, who shares his name with Prince Harry reached the age of eleven he began to receive mail which once again his uncle concealed from him. His uncle was aware that the letters were from the Magic World.
As more letters arrived his uncle moved the family to another address but the to avoid them falling into Harry’s hand, but the letters followed them wherever they went. In the first hour of his eleventh birthday, Harry was sat at home a hundreds of letters began flying through the letter box. HIs aunt and uncle then moved him to an island where a mysterious man, Hagrid, appeared and delivered a letter that Harry should have read a week ago. The letter invited him to enroll at a magic school, much to his Uncle Vernon's displeasure. His aunt and uncle had already enrolled Harry at Stonewall High School, a local public school so when Harry went off to Hogwarts they told people that Harry’s disappearance was due to him attending St. Brutus’s Secure Centre for Incurably Criminal Boys.
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was located in a castle in the middle of a ring of mountains in Scotland, the birth country of Sean Connery, and was usually reached by taking the Hogwarts Express from Platform 9 3/4 at Kings Cross station, London.
While at Hogwarts, Potter became a student wizard of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he belonged to the house of Gryffindor. While attending Hogwarts Harry involved himself in playing the sport of quidditch and continued to battle with the villain who had murdered his parents, Lord Voldemort.
Harry’s years at Hogwarts saw him making some of the best friends of his life. His closest friends were Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. He had a constant rivalry with and dislike for Draco Malfoy.
Growing up at Hogwarts saw Harry growing from a thin child with brilliant green eyes, which he inherited from his mother, and black messy hair, a lightning-shaped scar on his forehead and large round glasses held together with tape, into a well accomplished wizard. Harry’s wand, which was the ‘brother’ of Lord Voldemort’s, consisted of Holly and Phoenix feathers from Dumbledore’s phoenix. Along with his wand Harry also had an invisible cloak, Marauder’s Map, a pocket sneakoscope and a two way mirror.
The school friends of Harry at Hogwarts were also in training to become wizards and to qualify for a place at Hogwarts the student's qualifications were that they had to be ‘magical people’, wizards and witches, not normal, unmagical ones, referred to as the 'muggles'. A wizard or witch can be born from two magical parents, two muggles, or a mixture thereof, a half-blood. A derogatory name for those witches and wizards born of Muggle parentage is Mudbloods. This is an insult used only by purebloods who feel that Half-blood and Muggle-born witches and wizards are somehow inferior to purebloods.
Hogwarts offered Harry and his friends the chance to call upon their gifts and natural abilities and to learn to control them in the pursuit of good. Harry and his friends "cast spells" and uttered incantations and made potions.
Harry left Hogwarts school at the age of seventeen, in 1998, the year that saw the death of Frank Sinatra and the release of ‘Sex and the City’ starring Kim Cattrailand Sarah Jessica Parker
Harry's character has been portrayed in five movies starring British actor Daniel Radcliffe following the success of the series of books written about his school days, once again, by British author J K Rowling
