Dia Mirza (hindi: दिया मिर्ज़ा)[1] or Diya Mirza Handrich,[2] nicknamed Dee, (born December 9, 1981) is a former Indian model and actress who appears in Bollywood films. She was Miss Asia Pacific for the year 2000 and was also second runner up in the Femina Miss India 2000 beauty pageant.

Personal life and education
She was born in Hyderabad, India. Her father, Frank Handrich, was a German interior designer from Munich and her mother is Deepa, a Bengali Indian.[3] They separated when she was six years old. Her father died when she was nine and her mother remarried Ahmed Mirza[4] who died in 2004.[5] She retained a Muslim surname (Mirza) from her stepfather, though she herself is a Hindu .[6] Later she adopted the last name of her birth-father and became Dia Mirza Handrich.
She stated that she suffered from "low self-esteem" as a child.[7] When living in Khairatabad, Hyderabad, she attended Vidyaranya High School For Boys And Girls, a school based on the teachings of Jiddu Krishnamurti, and later Nasr School, in Kushnuma.[8]
Currently, she lives in Bandra, Mumbi. To brush up on acting before Shootout Lokhandwala she took a one week course of Film at New York University[9]
Mirza was previously dating Endorsement Manager Bunty Sachdev (also known as Amit Sajdeh), after that she was linked with Actor Kunal Kapoor and then with Director Apoorva Lakhia, which also broke up two years back.

Dia wanted to complete her graduation in Arts by correspondence, but decided to postpone it as it was becoming difficult to juggle between the Miss Asia Pacific Competition, modeling assignments, traveling and training. She was assisted by Sabira Merchant on diction and etiquette; diet with Anjali Mukherjee; gymnasium and physical fitness with Talwalkars; clothes from Ritu Kumar and Hemant Trivedi; skin care with Dr. Jamuna Pai; and make-up and hair-care from Bharat and Doris Godambe.[10] She likes babies and chocolates, her favorite dish include Italian Pasta. She is proficient in Urdu, Bengali, Hindi, English.[11] She currently resides on Veronica Road, Bandra (West), Mumbai.[12] Her shoe size is 7, she has light brown eyes, brown hair, stands 5 ft 6 intall,[11]

She made her cinematic debut with Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein opposite R. Madhavan.[13] The film was not a box office success. A series of unsuccessful films followed, among them Tumsa Nahin Dekha and Deewaanapan.
In 2005, Mirza appeared in Parineeta, a Vidhu Vinod Chopra production. She also played in the music video Kajara Mohabbat Wala alongside Sonu Nigam from the album Kajara Nite. The album contained multiple remixes, but was mainly advertised with the title song, sang by Sonu Nigam and Alisha Chinai.[14]
She has also appeared in Dus and in Fight Club. She will appear later this year in Familywala and Naa Naa Karte.Early in her career she was tagged as a look-alike of Aishwaraya Rai.

Controversies
Mirza's car was seized in 2006 for alleged evasion of custom duties.[15] In that same year, she and fellow-actor Aamir Khan publicly expressed support for the Narmada Bachao Andolan, a group protesting the building of a dam. Beginning her career as a model, Rao made her acting debut with Ab Ke Baras(2002), which went unnoticed. However, she grew into prominence when she starred in Ken Ghosh's love-story, Ishq Vishk(2003) and earned her first Filmfarenomination in the Best Female Debut category. Delivering acclaimed performances and commercial success with films like Main Hoon Na (2004) and Vivah2006), her biggest commercial success so far, she has established herself as one of the most promising actresses of Bollywood.

Personal life
Amrita Rao was born in Chitrapurto Deepak Rao. She belongs to the Chitrapur SaraswatBrahmin family in Karnataka[2][3] She has a younger sister Preetha Rao who is also an actress. She speaks Kannada EnglishMarathi, Hindi and her mother tongue, Konkani[4].

Rao attended C.G High School in Mumbai,and later enrolled in Sophia College to pursue a degree in Psychology While studying there, she auditioned for an advertisement for Fairever Face Cream. To her surprise she was selected amongst 60 other contestants. After that, she got many offers and became one of the most sought-after models in India within an year.
Her appearance in Cadbury’s Perk Karwa Chaut ad and the Bru Coffee advertisement helped her receive offers from film directors in Bollywood As she wanted to complete her education, she refused them. After earning a degree in psychology, she began her profession as an actress, working in films.

Acting
She made her acting debut with Ab Ke Baras (2002), but gained recognition only after the success of her 2003 film, Ishq Vishkin which her portrayal as Payal earned her the girl-next door image. Success followed for her in 2004 with films like Mastiand Main Hoon Na
Her career took a setback when her following releases, Deewaar (2004), Vaah! Life ho tu aisi(2005), and Pyare Mohal(2006) did poorly at the box office. Things turned around when she starred in Sooraj R. Barjatyas blockbuster Vivah(2006) opposite Shahid KapoorThe film was a universal success[5]and her performance was well appreciated by critics,[6]earning her a Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Award.
Rao recently made her debut in Tollywoodwith the Teluguhit Athidhiopposite Mahesh Babu.Amrita had no releases in Bollywood in 2007. Amrita's first release of 2008 was My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves , which did not do very well at the box office but the subsequently released Welcome to Sajjanpurwhere she played a village belle- did decently.
